Joel and Mayra
Winding Our Paths Together.
Our story began... well its a bit complicated to say when it started, but let me try. Our parents have known each other forever, since about 1992. Mayra was 5 and I was 9, but we never really met. Because of our parents, throughout the years we attended many of the same events. I have a few pictures of Mayra before we met, which is kind of funny.
We really didn't meet until we were much older. April 19, 2009, Conrado and Yolanda Mendez brought their youngest daughter Mayra to celebrate her birthday with their good friends Joel and Maria Balderas at their restaurant, Tequila Patio. I was working that night and saw something I liked, so I joined my parents at the table. As they were getting ready to leave Mayra was playing at the hostess stand. I joked with her asking her if she wanted a job. She humored me with a fake laugh and said no. (So, who's surprised?) So, I didn't sweep her off her feet, but I planted a seed.
Fast-forward to June, Mayra's cousin Gaby had been wanting to go see Intocable on June 11, 2009 at "Escapde 2001". Mayra didn't want to go and tried to fight Gaby off. Eventually, Gaby prevailed and they were set to dance the night away at Escapade.
Meanwhile, back in Spring, I was planning to go see my cousin Jorge and his band Sizzmo play at Escapde that very night.
While both Mayra and I will listen to Norteño music neither of us would have bought tickets to be there that night and hence we would not have been there if it were not for our respective cousins. Thanks to them, that night we ran into each other. The following is not a lie or an exaggeration. Mayra came up to me, and started hitting on me. [Mayra will tell you different. According to her version she was being polite and was just saying hello, but that's not what I remember.] What could I do? We dance the night away and I was rewarded with her number.
